Out and about today we came across a pub called The Anne Boal Inn! Awful, isn't it?

As it's in Northern Ireland, they're probably playing safe. Protestants will like the name of the wife of the guy who founded the C of E, whereas Catholics might enjoy the fact that he bumped her off. Further, somebody at least will appreciate the type of pun that far too many poor Irish Comedians seem to rely upon!

Anyway, it's not as boring as the Railway Hotel, which is what it used to be called ;-)

Just after googling it myself Buenchico and see that the original owner was called Anne Boal.

I wouldn't have believed that, EM1, unless I'd just looked up 'Boal' as a surname in the Oxford Names Companion. It does indeed exist, as a Northern Ireland variation on 'Bowler' which, in turn, either means a maker of bowls or (perhaps appropriately here) a heavy drinker.
