On BBC this morning there was a report about a bridge in Tadcaster that was destroyed in the floods last week. The government has promised to make it a national priority to rebuild it. A resident was interviewed complaining that nothing had been done to start the rebuild yet. Just what do they expect ?Today was the first day since Christmas eve that companies have been back at work, how could it be possible to do anything ? Apart from the fact that there has been no one at work the river was still at least 9 ft above its normal level. I have great sympathy for those affected by the floods but they can't expect miracles. I have friends in Tadcaster and have visited many times , they tell me there is a free bus service to ferry people from one side of the town to the other and the army is helping reinforce flood defences, but they do not expect a new road bridge to be built overnight.

as it appears they haven't done a lot yet to sort out the Somerset Levels, a year on, I wouldn't be holding my breath in Tadcaster.

For once I actually feel slightly sorry for the government, they are getting the blame for a years rain falling in 2 weeks.

I seem to recall that the Army built a Bailey Bridge in record time, two years ago in Cumbria. Could the Army not do something of the kind again ?
but this is becoming a more frequent occurrence (didn't something similar happen to Somerset?) They're not being blamed for the rain, they're being blamed for not planning for it.
Yeah mikey I did applied math once

and itlooks OK to me to put a box bridge across the arch bases whcih have not been washed away ...

I mean think a bridge too far and 1945
the allies didnt tool up to the bridges on the rhine and say
oops they are blown
that means the war will last until 1946

no they did not
Blame the EU and their water directive then vote out the EU and we might then be allowed to dredge our own waterways in the UK and stop the flooding
// they are getting the blame for a years rain falling in 2 weeks. //

yeah they are a cabinet full of Wets !

The yanks mulberry harbour didn't fare so well post D Day with pontoon and Bailey attachments post D day storms :-(
The mulberry harbour was designed by a welshman.
Is this the same Tadcaster bridge where a resident can be heard on the video clip egging on its destruction?

I was aware of that. A Swansea uncle of mine helped build the caissons.
The Americans didn't listen how to site and tether them and the wicked wind blew them down in the expected channel storm. The Brits one continued to function. Shame they didn't take the mick out of Hobarts funnies. Might of saved morelives on Omaha.
Egging on it's destruction and now egging on it's rebuild - they ain't got time to tarry in Tadcaster.
