if its been frozen for a year?
Trying to clear my fridge/freezer for defrosting and came across food that I didnt know I had, inc. meat with sell by date of last year (2014). The sell by date was obviously from fridge. Would it be safe to defrost and eat from frozen? (cooked obviously...)
Thanks

The sell by date doesn't matter, it would be the use by date and that only matters if it hadn't been frozen.

Defrost and check for freezer burn - if not affected it will be safe.
I would cook and eat it !

if it freezer burnt, its still safe to eat but will be better stewed or casseroled.
What does freezer burn look like?

You should defrost most meats in fridge first before cooking, do not defrost at room temperature.

Thanks Bath...
Whats freezer burn islay? (im a bloke...)
freezer burn is likely to occur for items stored in the freezer too long. There is a limit to how long items should be stored in the freezer. Sooner or later the water molecules will find their way out of the frozen food to a colder place in your freezer.

Why?...... Have never understood that.
And why not defrost in microwave?
You can defrost in microwave but by doing so the meat could start cooking slowly. You can also defrost in cold water for a few hours but remember to change the water after approx 30 mins. See below.
