would it be a good idea if all exhaust tail pipes were on the right hand side of a car so that the gasses were away from the pavement away from pedestrians and children, especially those in pushchairs

Motorists pay more than enough to run their cars already why should we pay extra to improve the health of pedestrians, wear a mask if it upsets you.

Yes.
But I know nothing of engines or cars, so there may be a reason for them being on the left that I am not aware of.
I do remember being concerned when I pushed a push chair, though. Many moons ago now when exhausts were dirtier.
That would mean making different design cars (not just steering/drive) for the UK, VERY expensive. I am also certain it would be useless as well.
What if the wind blows it back across to the left?
There is no 'side' for the exhaust any way, just look at the cars you see.
There are right/left/center/ dual / double/twin exhaust pipes.

I've just had a look out of the window, our exhausts are on the left of the cars, the offside, which is away from the pavement on two of them, the third has one either side, do you honestly think the width of a car will make any difference?

would just a deflector fitted to the pipe directing the gasses away from the pavement especially busy main streets where cars are just crawling along. also does cost come before health just look at the people with breathing problems nowadays

it wouldn't have any appreciable benefits .

The gases are dispersed into the air all around , not just on the side of where the exhaust is located
Exhaust gases are moving all the time ....wind, movement of cars etc . A metre either way will make no difference.
when a car is moving at any speed faster than walking speed the exhaust is sucked into the turbulent zone behind the car and thoroughly mixed into the air passing around the car. Try leaving your boot or tailgate open to see how much of the exhaust gets into the car.
Modern cars now have catalytic converters, there are very few left on the road without them, they only emit water vapour and CO2 no harmful gasses.
The old cars that used Leaded petrol were in a different league, they really did emit harmful gases the exhaust gas had the Lead from the petrol in it.

then why are they thinking of banning diesels from city centre
particulate carbon and nitrogen oxides
If you look at the position of each exhaust Woolley, a lot are directed down to the road surface.
Maybe not much effect changing the side but how about having them go straight up? Sounds crazy but artic vehicles do it and bus's do it also. maybe diagonal pointing up and backwards from the top of the vehicle
