Cyprus Holiday Guide: Driving in Cyprus

Cyprus is an island filled with scenic views, lush Mediterranean backdrops and an understated charm that can be experienced across this magnificent country.

If you would like to discover the wonderful sights dotted around the island, there is no better way to do so than by car.

There are a number of driving routes around the island that follow particular themes, offering a unique and captivating driving experience.

Antiquity Route

Driving all along the south coast of the island, this route takes in pre-historic sites like the ancient ruins at Kition, Amathous and Kourion, Aphrodite’s sanctuary at Kouklia and the Tombs of the Kings. The towns of Limassol and Lanarka can also be found on this historic route, making it easy to stop off for food and drink on the way.

Western Route

This circular route goes through the unspoilt western part of Cyprus, including the fishing villages of Polis and Pomos. The famous Troodos Mountains are also available on this route as are the Cedar Valley, Kykkos Monastery and Diaziros Valley.

Wine Route

Centred on Pafos, this route takes you into the Troodos Mountains and through some of Cyprus’ most extensive vineyards. This route is ideal for those who want to mingle with the locals and sample some locally produced wine.

Byzantine Route

One of the longest routes around the island takes you past a number of Byzantine painted churches, listed by UNESCO as world heritage sites.

Lefkosia (Nicosia)

The 1000 year old capital sits right at the heart of the island, a busy modern commercial city. At its centre is the old quarter with narrow streets, overhanging balconies and a beautifully restored pedestrian precinct.

All of these drives are best experienced when you are not tied down to your hotel or resort, that’s why most people who partake in this kind of activity rent their own Cyprus villas, allowing them the freedom to come and go as they please.
