Will I get a refund off my Lanzarote holiday , going on the 23rd, and if so what could I spend it on in two days?
If they was such an announcement and a set date given (highly unlikely) and you had a month to do something crazy and not worry about how to pay for it

It's a cracker, this one, isn't it! The conspiracy theorists are all in a kerfuffle because they've (finally!) found two disparate sources which by some amazing coincidence point at almost the same date, i.e. Nostradamus and the Mayan calendard.
The thing about about the Mayan calendar, though, is that it doesn't actually predict the end of the world - it just stops. Although the Mayans understood the concept of an annual cycle, they believed that each annual cycle was part of a much bigger 26,000 year cycle. It just so happens that the current 26,000 year cycle comes to an end on 21 December 2012.
