Can anyone tell me what there is to do in Filey, N.Yorks for a short break. We have two young children and are looking to see what goes off there or what there is to do. Looking on the Filey websites there doesn't look much at all. Just a museum... Can anyone else help please? Thank you

does it have to be filey?
Question Author
Yes. We have been offered a few days stay in the summer. Can you help?
move a bit further up to Whitby, much nicer,a lot more to do.
will you have a car?
Filey is probably the quietest of the main Yorkshire coast seaside towns this means you get more charm and peace but less excitement. I went on many family holidays there as a kid but that was 40 years ago and the world has moved on. Having said that, the beach is excellent and the larger noisier resorts of Brid and Scarborough are only a short car ride away
When are you thinking of going?
Primrose Valley just outside Filey opens for the season in March, I don't know if you can go there as a day visitor, but it might be worth a ring, there's loads to do there.

Thank you all. Yes we will have a car so hopefully we'll be able to go up to Whitby on a day or two. We'll probably not go for the full week then, maybe just three days. I just hope the kids won't be too bored.
depends on the childrens ages but Whitby is good and York is not too far away, both worth a day visit
There is a massive Haven site at Filey - not sure if they still do day passes to the facilities
that's the Primrose Valley site hc.........there's lots for children there.
Filey is a traditional seaside resort which (like so many other British seaside resorts) is lovely on a sunny day but can leave you at a bit of a loss for something to do when the heavens open.

Apart from the beach

and the amusement arcade (with a few children's rides), it offers the following (and not much else!):

However it's only 7½ miles to Scarborough (or just 18 minutes on the train), where you'll find the lovely Peasholm Park:

together with indoor and outdoor play centres for the kids, a ruined castle to explore

the North Bay Railway:

lots of boat trips, putting greens and plenty more.

as i recall we struggled to fill more than a couple of hours in filey. as a kid i used to love being on the beach for hours and hours so if the weather is good you could be on to a winner,. if the weather is not so good take yourselves off to whitby, scarborough, and lots of pretty villages around the moors. surely just a change of scenery for a few days is better than the 'same old same old'? i think you will enjoy it.
Don't know how old the kids are but there's a Go Ape adventure playground thingy in Dalby forest.

The only thing to do in Filey is count the dead people propped up in bus shelters. It is dire.
The Haven holiday site admits people on a day pass and there is plenty to do in there.
For days out, give Bridlington a miss as it is just as bad as Filey.
I agree that Whitby is brilliant for a day out (I live there!) - take the kids to the Whitby Wizard on the West Cliff - they will love it.
Scarborough is busy but it is quite scruffy there. A Polish friend of mine said that Scarborough reminds her of Poland in the communist days
Mrs O. Am coming back up to the NN Moors in May. We come up yearly for a Whitby and Moors fix. It has been our favourite place for years, except for Turnip country of course. I will look out for you in your turban and overalls. I never realised you lived in Whitby.

We are staying at Staunton near Pickering. Love it!!
And I love the fudge shop!! Justins? (I think)
hi Joey

the beaches are lovely, we went a few years back when kids were 6 months and 3yo
we went to whitby, scarborough, robin hood's bay.

we found a lovely shop it scarborough that did the old style sepia photos (where you get to dress up) and got some lovely photos done.
lottie - if you want to meet up for a coffee ( normal or turnip flavoured), let me know
