My brother is in the air force and has been to Norway twice on detachment, but signing up is probably a bit drastic for you.
on some occaisions it is possible to view the aurora from northern britain in deepest winter. shetland and the faroes get the phenomena more often.
Flight to Aberdeen, then a hire car to the northernmost tip of Scotland, and a ferry across to the Shetlands.
Relies on clear skies. In my experience you won't find much of them in the Shetlands or the Orkneys!
