I've just heard on the radio that life expectancy for a man in Glasgow East, is between 54 and 56 years. Are things really that bad in Glasgow, and if so, do you know why?

Thanks for that Skreech - most enlightening.
I'm not sure if they're in Glasgow East but I'll ask my Brother-in law or sister who live near Glasgow.
I do know that even with the ban on smoking, the volume of people that do is quite staggering but whether this is the main contributor to the reduction in living years, I don't know.
Diet, vices (smoking, drinking, drugs etc) and exercise I think. But seeing as Glasgow has just won the comp to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, things may be on the up.

i don't think it is any worse than most towns for poverty, diet, unemployment etc

yes i am glaswegian
Too much of the following, all deep fried, but delicious.

Fish supper
Pudding supper
Pie supper
Chicken supper
Sausage supper
Pizza supper
Haggis supper

The supper part is the chips.
Not forgetting the deep fried mars bar in batter.
All washed down with cans of special brew.
This is real body & soul food, none of your fancy stuff from Marks & Spencers.

I lived in Easterhouse, Glasgow for 6 years and I can tell you that the lifestyle people lived there was not healthy. Things like yoga and meditation or jogging would have provoked mocking laughter from neighbours. The local supermarket sold easy food because (apparently) there wasn't a demand for world cuisine, exotic ingredients and healthy stuff.

I now live far away from there, with a professional, graduate job, so maybe I'll live longer.
I think all those things are true and the simple fact that the weather is fairly pants too. They aren't hardy country types so they let the weather beat them into staying inside all to often.
Glasgow east is quite bad yes, but its a tiny proportion of Glasgow.
Its just like anywhere else, you have your good parts and your bad.
I live in Glasgow and my area was named few months back, the best place to raise a family in the UK.

Also gives a list of the ten worst at the bottom.

Most of the people there are unemployed and so dont lead very healthy lifestyles.
I dont agree with the comment on the weather as I live in Glasgow and no one I know would let the weather get between them and going out! But then I haven't ever met anyone from Glsgow east so you may be right.

Thanks for your answers. I've never been there and just wondered why its inhabitants die at such a young age. That statistic sounded like something from Victorian times. Sad.
quite a few factors determining this low life expectaincy, most have been mentioned above, but also... people who have disability receive incapacity benefit. which is not a lot to live on. therefore confining many to a life of poverty. glasgow had the highest number of people in receipt of this benefit.
folk who do work are usually unskilled and receiving the national minimum wage, 5.35 per hour.
glasgow always had industry steel works, shipbuilding and the famous templetons carpets, just to name a few, all almost finished. bar the shipbuilding .. nothing had replaced these places of employment.
drug use is prevalent and goes hand in hand with all of the above.
Not Smiles Better then?
och aye, you'll always get a confab in glasgow, upbeat friendly folk.
never have i been on a bus and not been spoke to by someone. your never alone.
You don't have to be employed to eat healthy , fresh vegatables and fruit are easy to come by if people can be bothered to actually do something for themselves, It constantly makes me angry that "they are fat cos they are unemployed" what a load of twaddle, get out use your time effectively , learn to cook , don't blame the system, help yourself wherever you can !!
When you are 50 take that well known advice from Horatio Alger :- ''Go West young man.''
