I'm going to put Adelaide as it asks for 2 cities and as the book is called a town like alice have ruled out alice springs

Alice Springs has a TOWN council. I think this confirms it is Adelaide

The Sunday Times has kindly answered this question themselves this week in Q&A.The Ghan has operated between Adelaide and Alice Springs since 1928.From Feb 8 the line will extend to Darwin.Pity we didn't think to ask them some more questions.
