duty free cigarettes

What happens if im found to be over my duty free allowance?? Can i go to jail or would they confiscate the cigarettes, I'm currently in bangkok and was hoping to bring around 10 sleeves back, these are for personal use i may add, any advice would help

My mate was caught over the allowance and she had all the cigarettes confiscated, including the ones she would have been able to bring back legally if she hadn't tried to bring more.
Customs would definitely confiscate the cigarettes. They would still have the right to prosecute you. That's probably unlikely but, with 10 times the legal limit, it couldn't be ruled out.

Stick to your allowance of 200 cigarettes. It's safer!

i had this problem but with alcohol. When i went to New York i could only bring over the limit back on my last connecting flight back to manchester. they wont send you to jail as it is only ciggarettes, confiscating them is an option.im guessing you will be ok...i personally would ring your airline and ask them.
they can confiscate or ask you to pay the duty, last twice I have been through customs at Gatwick it has been without a soul on duty in the customs hall.
You would be better off to put them in your suitcase though rather than carry a bulk in your hand luggage, dead give away.
