when you apply for a new one, you have to send you old one in. Do you definitely get the old one back?

yes,usually with the corner of it cut off,so you cant use it for anything

cheers, thoughht so. Old passports have a couple of stamps (plus USA visa) and wife wants to keep them as trophies/mementos

As long as it's not defaced the USA visa remains valid until it expires, so can be used with the new passport if necessary

Yes, steve is right; they do cut the corner off the edge of the passport, so it is good for nothing. Hope this answer help you.
