Just put 'australia visa' into google and loads of sites offering Visitor ETA visas came up with prices ranging from 20 to 6. All these sites say something like 'Australian Government approved'. Is there any way of knowing if these are all bone fide, or has anyone any experience of Oz online visas.

If you go through the website of the Australian Gigh Commission in London, and follow the links, you'll end up here:
http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/
(Note the 'gov.au' in the URL, which verifies that it's the official site).

Use that site and you know that you'll be safe. Any other site should be treated with extreme caution.

The ETA fee is Aus$20.

I used Trailfinders for my Thai Visa... sent them the completed visa forms (which they sent me initially) and fee and they dealt with the Thai embassy and posted it all back to me... simple. They offer a 'visa service' for any country...
My wife and I used the online ETA visa's at http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/ last year and had no problems on entry at Melbourne.
