Anyone Travelled through Mali?

I am hoping to travel through Mali with my wife, possibly next year and wondered if anyone had any good links, personal experience, general information or book recomendations.
We plan to travel from Bamako to Timbuktu going up the Niger part of the way and if possible using desert taxi's and camel train for the rest.
