Public Transport in FLORIDA
Florida is a big place. Which part of Florida are you going to, and which parts do you want to get to ?
If you mean in orlando, you can use the trolley bus which goes up and down Internaltional Drive - regular and cheap a 7 day pass costs $7. Or you can use the Lynx buses (which locals tend to use) to go further afar, ie. Disney, etc. You can get timetables from the tourist info which was based at the Mercado shopping centre last time I was there.
miami is fairly well served - metropolitan area by Metro-Dade transportation (bus & train), http://www.miamidade.gov/transit/
Miami is connected to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach by regular trains operated by Tri-Rail, http://www.tri-rail.com/ but bear in mind the "airport" station is actually nowhere near, being a bus transfer away.
Both Amtrak or Greyhound can get you from one end of the state to the other, but Orlando itself has no structured transportation network, relying instead on limousine operators, eg http://www.mearstransportation.com/

If you have never been before you will find that Florida is a big spread out place, If you are doing the typical theme park holiday around International Drive/Disney/Universal, then public transport links are pretty good, many hotels run shuttle services to the theme parks, and the I drive trolley travels up and down I drive all day (its very cheap)
Its way more convenient to have a car if you can, but you can manage without. Its also quite hard walking any distance because of the heat and humidity, walk a mile to a restaurant and you will be dripping, this does make the Pina collada taste extra nice though!!
