Hi - I have planned to go to Cuba the first two weeks of July. Does anyone know if this is a safe time to go in terms of hurracaines and bad weather? Also any tips on going there in general would be most helpful. Thanks x

officially the "hurricane season" runs from June to November, however the formation of hurricanes in the area is directly related to how warm the ocean temperature gets in the spring & early summer. The first named storm of 2006, Alberto, has just been logged by the authorities, although it's pretty tame by hurricane standards.

You might be unlucky to catch a storm in July, but generally you should be OK.

Hurricane season starts on June 1st, and lasts through autumn, so probably to about Oct / Nov, as previously mentioned.

Check out the following website http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ which is the US National Hurricane Centre website.

You can find details of historic storms (see Seasons Archive). Last year was the worst year for hurricanes. The last hurricane to be recorded in 2005 was Hurricane Epsilon which lasted 29th Nov to 8th Dec. Only 5 hurricanes have previously been recorded in December.

I remember hearing somewhere that the expectation is that there will be at least 6 significantly large hurricanes this year. The first hurricane is currently in the Gulf of Mexico.
