How long do you need to have held a full (UK) driving licence before you can rent a car in the USA?

It depends on the rental company - each one will have a different rule. Sometimes the same company will have a different rule in different locations.


If you are 20 or under you will have great difficulty except in New York and Michigan where the law says they have to rent to you.

It also helps tremendously if you have one of the 'new' driving licenses that include the photo card. They really love 'photo ID' in the States.
