How large is Broadway? How many theatres are considered to be 'on Broadway'? And how close are the theatres that show plays said to be 'off Broadway'?

There are at present 39 theatres on Broadway as far as I know, try www.livebroadway.com Hope this helps!
Originally, 'Broadway' consisted of just the one street. However, the term now refers to the general area in the vicinity of Broadway and Times Square holding the 39 500-plus seater theatres, in much the same way as we have 'the West End'. Most of the theatres are within less than 10 mins walk of one another. 'Off-broadway' theatres are slightly more scattered around the city and consist of about 275 100-499-seat venues. They generally have slightly more experimental, untested work. The Broadway shows Rent and Avenue Q both started Off-Broadway. Then there is 'Off-off-broadway' which is generally very experimental, improvised, or artsy and in an fewer-than-100-seat venue.
