My son possibly needs to renew his passport. His present ones expiry is Feb 2021. Wasn’t there something about the added on time that was withdrawn. I remember a . gov link to check If passports were valid. Can’t find it now. Any ideas. Thanks.

passport renewal was running incredibly well - I got mine in 6 days from submitting at a post office, my daughter in five and my bro-in-law, during lock down, 6 days...and done online.
If you renew the new one will be valid from now, not from the expiry date of the old one.
The system was running OK at the beginning of lockdown but it's pretty dire now (from what I have heard) as the backlog has caught up with them.
mine took 4 months.....I guess I shouldn't have mentioned the job in the KGB......

Chris. this part in one of your links is the issue “Only renew your passport now if you’re travelling on or before 30 September 2020” He maybe traveling around 5th Sept.
I travelled to France in March with a passport that had less than 6 months validity (expired in July) and there was no problem. The need to have 6 months left (as shown in the link I gave) only comes in after 1 Jan 2021.
Some feedback on the time taken to renew my passport:
Applied for online on 4 Aug
Old passport posted on 5 Aug, received (by HMPO) on 8 Aug
New passport issued on 11 Aug
Printed and sent on 13 Aug
Received today (17 Aug)
