I have a caravan, and the boss keeps on at me to take her to Kent.
Well, I think I will try it next summer. Even if it is only to show her
Yorkshire is best. (Kidding)
How do I get down there without having to spend money
on tolls etc /

Method 1: Travel very early or very late. The Dartford Crossing is free between 10pm and 6am, so if you go down the A1(M) and the M11 you can take the M25 clockwise.

Method 2: Instead of using the A1(M), go down the M1 and take the M25 anti-clockwise, thus avoiding the Dartford Crossing.

Method 3: Take the M11 down to the M25 but then, instead of joining it, continue forwards to join the North Circular Road, enabling you to use the Woolwich Free Ferry.

However, given that it's not particularly expensive, I still think paying to use the Dartford Crossing (at a sensible time of day) is the easiest option!
I'd do the M25 anti-clockwise - or else do as Buenchico says and tackle Dartford Crossing outside rush hour. It's still pretty horrible, but cheaper than paying for the petrol to go all the way round, I'd think.
When we travelled for the NW to Dover regularly we used to drive through the middle of London, going over Tower Bridge, the kids loved it if they'd stayed awake. Congestion charge not payable at the weekend or after some time mid-week.
No, no! Just pay the toll fee for the Dartford Crossing and enjoy your holiday! If you do end up crossing late at night all well and good but then you'll be setting up in the dark. Please dont even contemplate taking a caravan through London nor the long way round the M25. Which part of Kent are you heading for?

Kent does not need any more rolling road blocks thank you.
