Looking for recommendations for a reasonably priced hotel please. The ones I have looked at are coming up at over £200 per night.
Thanks

Will you have a car? If so, motels will be a much better (and cheaper) option...but could be further from downtown.

No, will be using public transport
or you could try Air BnB.

We stayed as a fanily a year or so back, and the price was very reasonable for a 3-bed apartment close to Golden Gate Park.

If you only need a room, it's a good way to get a decent rate and also maybe meet some locals.

Yes I was thinking about Airbnb. I don't like the thought of putting hotels out of business, but they are so overpriced
We stayed at one of the bigger chains- Hilton I think- and it was less than that for a family room
I enjoyed it but the climate was very British- needed sweate rin teh summer. Alcatraz is worth a visit
Good point, FF. Every time I have been to San Francisco, it has been cloudy and cool. Drive 20 miles north to Point Reyes, or 20 miles south, and it is glorious sunshine.

Take warm clothing.
We stayed at the Hotel Carlton on Sutter Street when we went 6 years ago and it was amazing great location not horribly expensive and very welcoming.
We went in September and it was very warm - we turned up expecting it to be cool and I had to go and buy a hat!!
Will it just be you, or are you with a partner or an entire family group? (US hotels are often charged 'per room', rather than 'per person', so it can make a big difference).

However I'm finding no difficulty in finding hotels far cheaper than the figures you've suggested. e.g. the following are all fairly central:
Minna Hotel (about £48pn, inc breakfast)
Balmoral Hotel (about £53pn)
Winsor Hotel (about about £59pn)
Cable Car Hotel (about £64pn)
Oak Hotel (about £78pn)

Try Booking.com:

Also check out Hostelworld (which has some great budget hotels, and not just hostels):

(That's my favourite website for budget accommodation. Three or four years ago I found a superb little hotel in Madrid on that site, bang in the centre of the city burt on a quiet side street, which was wonderfully clean and with free wi-fi, TV, etc for just €22 per night)
If you're wanting to visit Alcatraz two tips. No 1, try and book tickets before you get there or get down to the booking place as soon as you arrive, we managed to get tickets for the following day by the skin of our teeth. Tip No 2, don't wear blue and white striped trousers or you will be teased mercilessly by the guide because you're dressed as a convict!!
