Looks like you will have to go via St Pancras, or 3 changes via Three Bridges, Redhill and Tonbridge.
depends what you mean by "best" - if you mean quickest, then as sddsddean suggests. if you mean cheapest, then add "Eastbourne" as a "via" option in a nationalrail search; but this route takes up to 45mn longer.
