Does anyone know whether it is necessary to have a passport to travel from Britain to the Republic of Ireland by ferry.

The Irish immigration authorities don't require a passport but it's possible, in these days of security concerns, that the ferry companies might require some form of photo ID.

Check the ferry company's website, give them a ring or check any documentation which comes with your tickets for details of their requirements. Or, if you can't manage any of that, just tell us which ferry company you're travelling with!

we are travelling with the stena ferry company.
Stena's web site isn't very helpful, so I went back to old-fashioned techology and phoned them up! (08705 70 70 70). Apparently, Stena may ask for ID when you check in but their requirements are not as strict as the airline's. Just make sure that you have something with you, such as a utility bill, which has the same name and address as on their booking details. (i.e. 'photo-ID', whether in the form of a passport or otherwise is not required).

Hoping this answers your question,

Chris
if you are a English citizan you do not need a passport, But you will need a photo identity with you eg:- Driving liecence
Just got back from there. We went on a plane though, but my friend couldn't find his passport and it is OK with EU photo ID. He used his photo-driving license (took his counterpart also). I'm not sure if that applies for the ferry, but I certainly can't imagine it being tighter security
