I'll be driving from Cairnryan to London in the very near future. Can anyone recommend somewhere to eat that's convenient to the M6 as it passes near Manchester around 6pm? I hate motorway/fast food preferring traditional/home cooking. Thanks.

Come off at Junction 19 on M6, right the way round the roundabout towards Knutsford, The Smoker comes up after about 300 - 400 metres on left. Haven't been for a while but was very good when I went.

It's TripAdvisor reviews are fantastic:

Directions:
Leave the M6 at Jn 24, taking the A58 exit (towards Ashton & St Helens)
At the end of the slip road, turn left onto the A58 (Liverpool Road).
After ½ mile, turn right onto the A49 (Warrington Road), where the Market Kitchen is the first building on your left.
(In practice though, since you'll need to find car parking, it's probably best to go straight on at that junction and then, almost immediately, turn left onto Bryn Street and then first right onto Garswood Street, where you'll find the free Ashton Market Car Park).
There is a book which I have seen and it gives all types of food available near motorways, but not actually on them. Driving instructions etc. to get you from the motorway to the food. Well worth searching out a copy
Probably too far north but the Westmoreland / Tebay services between junctions 37 and 38 are independently run and are far superior to normal motorway services.
