Naturally as this is in the school holidays, I would suggest Easter rather than summer as that is getting close to hurricane season. Companies like Virgin do all in packages, flights hotels and theme park tickets. That will be your cheapest option.
6 year old so you will have to do it in school holidays - personally I find Orlando more fun than Los Angeles. Any school holiday is going to be expensive.Booking seperately may be a good idea - check out Expedia. If you bank with Barclays you can get 6% cashback. if you opt for Virgin flights you can get money off or an upgrade using Tesco vouchers. Cheapest Disney tickets are direct from their own website. Seven days is probably adequate. If there are only 2 of you car hire will be cheap. As far as cash goes I always budget about £100 per day Travelex is usually one of the best on rates.
are you on FB dieseldick? there are some lovely helpful groups on there...
also this website has a ton of stuff

1.The best time to go is around sept/ oct time when it is not too hot

2. If you do go for a package deal from a tour operator - get booked up as soon as the brochures come out to take advantage of free child places

3. Definitely , go for two weeks ( which you will find is still not enough time to see and do attractions etc )

4. Most places - you can directly use american dollors travellers cheques as cash
I agree that Easter is likely to be the best time (although still mega-expensive) for Disneyland (California) or Walt Disney World (Florida).

However I'd want to query whether either is really the best place to take a 6yo child. The flights are far too long for most children of that age; Disneyland Paris would be a much better option, with far cheaper and much shorter flights. Further, you wouldn't have to stay in the (expensive) resort hotels if you didn't want to; you could stay in central Paris and commute to Disneyland. Any 6yo would enjoy the Paris site just as much as the US onesand you'd be able to throw in a visit to the Eiffel Tower, a trip on the Batobus and a day at the wonderful (and cheap!) Jardin d'Acclimatation [which young children love just as much as Disneyland] as well.
Just to add to Buenchico'suggestions of Eurodisney, there is also Parc Asterix very close Paris, so a trip to Eurodisney could include a trip there too.
Although 6 may be a little young for the Asterix books, the Parc is full of rides and attractions and, of course Asterix characters and Roman soldiers.
Boring, pedantic point:
'EuroDisney' changed its name to 'Disneyland Paris' 21years ago!
Yes , but Disney is Orlando Florida .

All others like Eurodisney are just not the same
^^^ Well it's not the original, Bazile!

Disneyland (Calfornia) came first, in 1955, with Walt Disney World (Orlando, Florida) not following until 1971.
Yes i know that chris - i meant that Orlando gives the best experience of Disney , in my opinion
Do you mean Disneyland (West Coast) or Orlando (Florida, East Coast)?

The suggestions will be different depending where you want to go.
I doubt that a 6yo child would notice the difference, Bazile!

I've just checked the Disney World website. An inclusive package of flights from Belfast, with flights, airport transfers, hotel accommodation, park transfers and park passes (for 1 adult and 1 child, for a fortnight's stay) works out at about £3½k. Adding in spending money would mean that DD would probably be looking at spending around £5k for the whole trip.

While it's not for any of us to tell DD how to spend his money, I can't help thinking that as he's currently unemployed (and looking into setting up his own business) he might not want to dig so deep into his reserves at the present time, especially when his daughter would almost certainly enjoy Paris just as much.
Well chris , i think that dd will enjoy Disney as much as his kid .

It's a mis-conception in my opinion that Disney is all about kids - it's as much about adults , if not more .

Anyway as you say, it's up to him how he spends his money .
You pays u money and takes u choice
Note that it's open till midnight at weekends - if you're still awake there's hardly any queues at that hour.

Benchieco your right 5k is way too much for me to fork out atm. i was thinking half that but obviously not.

its a once in lifetime trip, maybe i,ll take her somewhere in europe in summer will be better for us. bulgaria all inclusive break for a week.
I`m sure you could book it individually for much less than that but it would take a few hours research. Packages tend to be less well sorted, especially with Virgin Holidays, as they charge per person whereas most hotels in the US charge by the room. I`ve compared this before and significant savings can be done.
Try Port Aventura near Barcelona.

Very much like Disney (theme park, water park, hotels on site etc) but in the South of Spain so decent weather.
