Thank you
If you choose Calais as your port of entry, you're choosing the longest drive to warmer parts of France. Hence the popularity of Portsmouth-St Malo or Plymouth - Roscoff, or even Bilbao in northern Spain.
The longer and more expensive routes mean you arrive closer to sunny holiday areas, and as you'll have been overnight in a cabin (if you've any sense) then you're reasonably refreshed.
St Malo makes for an easy day's drive to the honeypots of the Vendee and the area to the west of Bordeaux, which is wick with caravan and camp sites.
Try Rogers Guide. It's very good
