...would their airline company be obliged to tell them the route the plane would be taking?
I can't imagine many civilian aircraft are using Ukrainian airspace at the present but passengers might want reassurance.

The fact that you're back shows that you did have a safe journey. It was just a few months after the Malaysian airliner was shot down. I guess your plane would have stayed north of the possible danger zone.
They obviously do not give you the correct flight path Sandy, you have some indication by the Flight Path Screen that comes up in front of you, but you know what the public are like, If they knew for sure they were flying over troubled area there would be comments. we have been lucky enough to have done it 3 times & still here.
No. They are not obliged but most airlines that are avoiding Ukraine have made it public (especially after MH17). Iraq is a no no at the moment.

Asked why Malaysia Airlines had not taken similar precautions, the Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak said international air authorities had deemed the flight path secure.

"The aircraft's flight route was declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organisation. And (the) International Air Transportation Association has stated that the airspace the aircraft was traversing was not subject to restrictions," he said.

Best to ask when booking your flight
If you look here you'll see very few flights passing over Ukraine. The best thing to do would be to watch your flight on the website prior to going eg if it flies on Sat 13 Dec, track it on Sat 6th and you'll see the planned route.

The routes do vary a bit. Sometimes Atlantic crossings go further north than other times and sometimes they will go out over a different part of the south west coast (for eg). It`s never exactly the same day after day.
