I travel regularly along the motorways between North Wales and Blackpool.

It is little wonder that many people stay in the middle lane, given the ruts caused by HGV's on the inside lane along long stretches of these routes.

They are really off putting and at the high speeds maybe a potential hazard.

Often the HGVs are in the middle lane too. Are you saying you can see ruts in the surface showing teh track all these HGVs follow? I'm not sure what the answer is- they probably do pay large amounts in road tax (unless they are from overseas of course)
ff.......HGV's are greatly subsidised by the motorist...£1800 for 44 tons =£40.91 per ton...opposed to me paying £490 for 1.8 tons =£272.23 per ton and 10 000 miles per year opposed to HGV's 150,000+ per year.

bright spark, if they weren't, your weekly grocery bill would triple overnight.
If the VED system was unbiased then logistics companies would charge more...but not 3 times more as you suggest. How could we expect Tesco and others to accept less than £3 billion profit.Meanwhile shall we all keep our heads in the sand and take all that is thrown at us in true Brit spirit?

That would be apalling!

Consider all those heavy goods vehicles not plying up and down the motorways, overtaking each other in the middle lane.

It'd be as bad as it is in Germany or France!
Whilst on topic........when derv reached £1 per litre we had blockades in abundance.....now the norm is £1.40 all is quiet...have I missed something...or have the hauliers gone soft?

cost on its own wouldn't make that happen - at present there are no more freight paths available on the West Coast route; a £250m scheme to remodel and resignal the area around Stafford will only realize one more freight path.
Wheel ruts from HGVs are a signicant danger to cars. It can be difficult to steer in them, as cars have a narrower gap between the wheels.

If they are so bad on the motorways you use, I suggest you make an official complaint.

I don't know whether this should be to the Highways Agency or the local council though. I suspect the Highways Agency is the most likely one to be responsible.
As the damage in question is caused solely by HGV's the hauliers should pay.
well, have you reported the state of the road to anyone?
I'm unsure how having my road fund licence reduced increases the cost of groceries. Unless there is another planned stealth tax on my spending.
No one can say if it is HGV's causing the damage but here's a thought if a lorry weighs 44 ton when the contractors lay the road do they use equipment used compress the surface enough, there is one answer make the motorways with concrete then all you will get is potholes. it's not the use it once again not enough investment as we have to support other countries first.

you've clearly not driven the A12 - between Chelmsford and Colchester, the concrete carriageways are worn and rutted, as well as crumbling and being full of holes.
It's not the HGV's at fault - it's the evil Construction Industry deliberately laying limited life roads so they get fresh jobs in the future. And as they contribute considerable funds to the Tory Party you are unlikely to get any remedy very soon (not that the Labour party did any better in this respect so don't hold your breath when they get back in).

Those HGV Drivers have got a lot to answer for!
