Brown Road Signs

When we are on holiday we usually go off the main road guided by brown road signs to a pub or hotel.

Can any establishment apply for a brown road sign or do they have to have some kind status.

In the past we have always been pleased with our find but the last time it was so awful and had obviously been so for some time that I was surprised that it had not been shut down

Thank you buenchico - also spotted the answers below

So York is difficult to find?
When we had the pub we were going to get brown road signs as a way of getting cheap advertising (they are really cheap to have). Sponsoring a roundabout is ridiculously cheap too, round here you just have to buy some flowers to put on one.

Bloody 'ell, Sherrardk, that's massive difference to what the Highways Agency is quoting (or, rather, estimating) of between £8,000 and £40,000!
I know! Really cheap advertising. You can get a whole roundabout for some petunias!
