Hi, I am planning a driving trip with my brother to France, Switzerland, Italy and then back either same way or preferably a different way. It would be in the middle of May. Time is not the problem it could be week or even more. Any suggestions about places on this route, stay for over night? Any campsites enroute or any other options? Would it be a good idea to cross over to Croatia from Italy using ferry and come back that way. I am in London if that helps. Thanks.

will you be taking your own tent with you or do you mean campsites like those eurocamp ones?

I do not have a tent but I can buy one. However if campsites are easy to book with tent already there then I would rather prefer that. We are planning to just drive without any pre planning and therefore trying to find better solution. Here in UK I have seen people spending night at service stations aswel because you have all of the facilities there like toilets etc and as I have a big seven seater and there would be plenty of room for only two people but I am not sure if you are allowed to do that in Europe. But that is just a thought as I would like to mix and match.
Keyplus, there are places around France where you can park and camp for free, which may be of interest to you if you have a suitable vehicle.

There's some useful info on this link...

When we drove through France there were lots of little turn offs on the motorways, which people would park up in and spend the night there. They had toilets, but that's about it. It was mostly truckers, but it would be a cheap alternative to an actual campsite.
Are you sure you're allowing enough time for this? I would suggest that it would take 2-3 days to get to northern Italy. Do you intend to look at places on the way or just get to Italy? If you go on google maps and then directions it will give you an idea of how many hours driving it will take to get somewhere. Eg I put in London as the starting point then Rimini as the destination, which it says is 15 hours driving. That's 2 days of driving at 8 hours a day or 3 at 5 hours a day.
Have a look on ebay for a bit of comfort during your journey.

2 people 3 nights ..... 20 quid each a night ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/City-trip-Vienna-4-Imperial-Renaissance-Vienna-Hotel-Holiday-Marriott-/390563972271?pt=UK_Tickets_Travel_Package_Holidays_CV&;hash=item5aef6d44af

Take a look and see if there is any along your route.
Try looking up Keycamp or Eurocamp sites online. You can take your own tent or camper on most of them or hire a small caravan for a night or two. We will be in France for three weeks in May so may see you around.

Spud - Time is not the problem, I am my own boss and my brother would be visiting me from back home as a visitor so he has plenty of time too.

I suggest you check Eurocamp or Keycamp for a hassle-free travel. They were very helpful when my cousin traveled by car the last time.
