My gf is going to Barcelona soon, and rather than buy an extra bag for her hand luggage she's considering just taking a carrier bag (it's the right dimensions). Is this allowed or she only allowed seal-able bages? She's flying with Ryan Air

not sure about Ryan air but I've had no problems with carrier bags when flying.

Buy some sweets and mags and stuff for the flight in W.H Smith in the airport and it goes into a carrier bag and I just carry it on board, never had a problem, it all gets scanned like any other carry on bag and you have to stuff it under the seats for take off and landing.
forgot to say you can always ask Ryan Air and get them to clarify, mind you if their customer service is anything like the owner then dont expect much in the way of politeness etc !
as long as it fits in the cage u can use any type of bag on ryanair cage is 55cmx40x20
as tezmand says, as long as it fits in their frames it should be fine.
Just as long as your girlfriend is aware that her handbag will also have to fit into the carrier bag, as hand luggage means ONE piece of hand luggage only. I always have my handbag with me, but when going through security and when boarding the plane I always pop my handbag into my hand luggage bag to comply with the one piece of luggage rule.
Ryanair probably have an extra charge for it.

For carrying onto Ryanair try & get a carrier bag marked Aer Lingus
