Driving to Lake Garda, Italy

We are planning to take a scenic drive to Lake Garda this summer and I'm looking for ideas on routes and what there is to see. I hear that the Austrian alps are fantastic but don't know what part would be the best to see. Also someone has suggested driving through Germany rather than France.

Any suggestions welcome.

I'd go down through France. Do the Palace of Versaille, Paris, Lyon, stop in Dijon for some moutard, into Milan, carry on, job done.

Thanks Naz. Feel we have "done" France so it's really the futher away countries that I'm not familiar with. You do make it sound very easy though!
