Just been back to London after about six months. I know I have approx. £25.00 on my card but both entering the underground today and leaving again several hours later, no figure appeared on the barrier screen . Is this now normal?

The balance shows so briefly that if you blink you miss it.

I'm slightly bothered by you leaving 'several hours later'. For most journeys that's way in excess of the time allowance and could lead to an excess fare being charged - two in fact.

The easiest way to check your balance is at a ticket machine

Sorry meant two separate trips.
Did it let you through? Might want to double check with a TFL staff member or put your oyster on one of the top up machine's to get your balance.

Will do thanks.
if you register your card online with tfl, you can keep track of expenditure at your leisure.......

I could give you a very good push. Then that would be checking your balance!
