Has anyone else been frustrated by the differing security measures at European and UK airports regarding hand luggage?
My recent experience at Gatwick - not allowed to take a jar of Marmite which was completely wrapped and sealed. Allowed to take a camera tripod in hand luggage case. They do not issue a receipt or allow you to retrieve the item upon return.
What happens to all the things that are confiscated? Maybe I am cynical but I would not be surprised if the security people rummage through all the confiscated items and take the best things home.
Bergamo in Italy - tripod is appearently a lethal weapon so not allowed and had to check it in to the hold.
I would suggest that Marmite in your hand luggage would be a total no-no at virtually every airport. I do sympathise however, especially with the tripod issue, although surprised at Gatwick allowing it on at all. In my opinion it sounds pretty much like a "sharp object". As 4getmenot suggests, put anything "suspect" in the hold and eliminate any doubts.
