In excel can you write a report of more than 40 pages?

I am unable to print a report that runs to more than 40 pages. Everyting beyond the 40th page has a grey background on the wcreen and will not print.

This is unlikely to be Excel's fault. What printer do you have? It sounds very much like it's running out of memory. Either that, or the driver is corrupt...

It still stores the data but, as mentioned, everything added is on a grey background on any computer and will not print. I have seen longer docs that are not grey after a few pages like mine. I think it must be the settings.

Have you set a Print Area, perhaps? If so, anything outside the area will not be printed.
You don't mention which version of Excel, but in 2007:
Page Layout
Print Area
Clear Print Area

Indeed. I have printed much larger areas than this...
