Normal dot template Word 2010

My Word 2010 is suddenly playing up. My header and footers have disappeared from the normal template upon opening a document - both were previously set to 1.25cm. My left and right margins on the document have remained OK at 2.5cm. The cursor now sits at the very top of the page instead of below the header.

I think that something's happened to my normal.dot template. I know I should be able to access the file via C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\ but the problem is that when I click on C:Documents and Settings, I get a message that C:/Docuents and settings is "not accessible" and "access is denied". there's also a little padlock icon on the file showing in the C drive.

How can I solve this problem. I'm using windows 7 Ultimate and a system restore back before two "critical updates" since 4 January has not restored Word to normal function.

thank you.

Approaching your settings via "Documents and settings" in not the approved way of doing things in Window7!
You should have a shortcut with your username on the desktop, but you can also get to it via Windows Explorer. (Desktop/YourUserName).
The application data folder is hidden by default, so once you've opened your UserName folder (which also contains, My Documents, Downloads, etc), you'll need to click Organize/Folder and Search Options.
Go to the View tab, click the option "Show hidden files..."
Once you've OK'd that, you'll see the Appdata Folder, which contains three folders "Local", "LocalLow", and "Roaming". I don't have Office on my Win7 machine, but I would guess that if you open the "Roaming" folder, you'll find it under Microsoft.

Yes you would, documents and settings doesn't exist in windows7 (or Vista) it is now called c:\users.

Thanks for that. I did find the “normal.dotm” file in Roaming. Clicking on this file does indeed bring up the corrupted Word document exactly the same as when I click on the Word icon on the desktop. The document is without a header and footer although the left and right margins are correct at 2.54 cm. Clicking on the header icon on the Word ribbon shows the header as being present at 1.25cm which is correct. The header does show as a dotted blue line on clicking the header icon, but the cursor is still at the top of the page and the only way of getting it below the dotted line is by pressing the return key twice.

Last nght I had a file called normalOld.dotm in the folder. When I selected this, it opened a document with the correct settings in place along with the header and footer. I tried transposing the file names, but it opened once and then reverted to the incorrect version and the previous file names.

I suppose what I'm asking is how do i get Word to open a document with the cursor below that blue dotted line?
