Mark it is a Samsung UE40C5100 LED TV as I said its connected by a scart but I want to run the sound from the tv through the surround sound but all I can find is a optical output
You are correct in saying there is no audio output on the other than the optical.

I'm surprised that any surround system has not got a digital input on it though... what is the surround system?

(and seeing as you only joined today, how do you know my name?)
probably he knows other people on here chuck and word of mouth that your a star "solve everything" bloke has prompted him to sign up lol
If it has a headphone socket, you may be able to use that with the right lead.
Some amps take an optical IN.
