My Packard Bell 6810 Sli has started to not recognise any of the USB ports. Powered it down 4 a week whilst away n all was well.....for 10 minutes then the Internet page I was on froze along with the USB points stopped working again. Is this a power problem? If not what else shud I check? Cheers all.

remove the battery and power supply, press the power button, put battery and power back in and give it another go.

Oh blow. Tried with a new battery and the method described but same problem arises after a few minutes.....USB linked equipment stops being recognised and screen freezes. Any more ideas? Cud it be the power or something else? Cheers
Personally I would now download ubuntu, burn it onto a CD and then you can boot the computer into ubuntu linux from the CD (no changes will be made to any thing on your hard drive) then plug the USB key in and see if it pops up on the desktop.

If it does and works fine it's a windows problem that need investigation, if it doesn't then it's a hardware problem.

Thanks again CF. Will throw my son off his laptop and give it a try. So frustrating for the mouse to work for a few seconds n then the system seemingly freezing (this time half way thru closing an app just after start up) as if time just froze! PC's.....can't live with them and u can't live without them!

Still in the process of downloading Ubuntu but need to buy some blank cd's tomorrow. At present after pulling power for a few mins then repowering up the system works n mouse (via USB) works for a few minutes then freezes again. Sign of Windows problem rather than hardware?

Tried Ubuntu and the USBs work. PC works fine for around 7 mins then the PC hangs. Have tried doing a restore to an earlier time but system hangs half way thru. Wot else can b tried other than a full system restore? Any chance it cud be a graphics card / power supply etc? Thanks
