Hey,

Not sure what else to do. The ping test thingy seems to be saying that my speed is ok, I've cleared the cache and yet still, internet is running slower than a very slow thing.

Any suggestions please? (Not too technical, I'm more of a 'idiots guide' person!)

Cheers

Can you be a bit more specific please? What's slow? file downloads? receiving e-mails? What's the "ping test thingy" and what (precisely) does it say?

Erm... Not really. I'm not exactly IT literate really.

The ping test thingy looks at my download/connectivity speed I think. The ping bit says 90, it hasn't finished checking my download speed. In fact, I had to refresh it because I think it foze.

Hotmail seems to be the thing that is working quickest for me at the moment, even looking at questions on AB is taking an age to load and I can forget looking at youtube or iplayer.

Does that make more sense?
computer might be full... your provider might have problems... might be electric clots in the wire bringing you power... Mine runs slow every night so I switch off the router and switch it on again - usually works.

Oh, I'm on a laptop! That's probably important too isn't it.

I think it's gremlins jno.
1. Shut down your laptop.
2. Pull the power lead out of your router/modem.
3. Wait 30 seconds
4. Put power lead back in router.
5. Wait 1 Minute
6. Turn laptop back on.
Then try again.

No power leads to a router/modem, it's broadband. I've already disabled and repaired the connection settings.
Download superantispyware and run a full scan with it, deleting whatever it finds http://www.superantispyware.com/ ( the free version) and see if that helps at all.
Broadband has to have a modem or router! It's a small box, with a sticky up aerial if it's wireless, plugged into a phone socket (or nearby if it's cable)
Vagrant.. I know China Doll... it is wireless... not a personal connection... the internet is provided for the whole building...
In that case, is everyone's Internet slow, or just yours?
I too have asked that question!

Not sure, been waiting for a couple of people I know to come back so I can answer them, I've already knocked on the door. The ping test thingy slowed down to 90ms with a download speed of 20kb I think before I disabled and repaired.
The "ping test thingy" suggests that the problem is with the connection between your laptop and the router, as opposed to the connection between the router and the Internet.
What does this "ping thingy" do? can you see any numbers like 192.168 or 10.0 ?
Have you tried to see what download and up load speeds you are getting ? You may not have the best DNS server , To check this download a program called NameBench and run it. It searches the internet for the best server both local and global and recommends the best for you. www.namebench.com If you haven't got your best server you can change it.What OS are you using?

It's a private one for the nursing residences I live in. The ping test when I posted this was showing 90ms and a speed of 20kb for downloads I think which I guessed was why the connection took so long. By the time I shut down, it was up to 700kb and I think 50ms. I didn't see anyone I knew to ask if they were also experiencing problems.

I'm going to have another go later this evening on the test and hopefully I'll see someone, but so far, I'm thinking it's the internet provider people and not my laptop which is the main thing I was concerned about.
hey try to delete unwanted files or software from the c drive and check the speed in this site http://www.ip-details.com/internet-speed-test/ it if continues you can use the internet download manager or some speed accelerator to boost up your internet speed....
