G'Day

Friends of mine have decided to genealogy research and they know less about it than I do, and I know nothing about it.

I am after help in the following areas:

A software program that can store info as they come across it, preferably freeware of shareware with a trial period, that has an easy learning curve or detailed helpful help files.

Hints as to how to go about it, most of their relatives (they think) live in Britain, so most of the research will be done over the net.

Links to sites that would contain records and/or instructions, forums etc that will be able to answer most of the questions they may have.

Thanks

Geoff

http://www.genesconnected.com is a good place to start.  And the 1901 census website.  http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ and here too http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com

As for software, I think something called GEDCOM is the standard geneaology format so anything supporting that would be good.  Have a look here : http://www.bykeyword.com/downloads/gedcom.html

Fortunately I remembered your post... although I'm in US, I do a great deal of genealogical work and from time to time I receive URL's that pertain to UK... here are two that may or may not be of interest:

Good luck!
