cds wont play on laptop..?

evening all
can anyone help please?
im trying to play some cds on my laptop, but im not having any joy..
i insert the disc, you can hear a whirring sound and then it goes quiet, and thats it! nothing.
help!
thank you.
its a newish laptop, under 12 months old, acer5735z, vista.
