Until recent upgrades of media player I could always play a dvd - now I can' play dvd which always worked. To the best of my memory the earlier versians allowed playback of dvd but no longer. The forums faq don't help and I object to paying for a decoder for a system which always worked before upgrade. I am now using VLC media play which is free and fine but for other reasons would like to use media player. Is my memory faulty or not.

VLC is good GOM is great too - both free - I haven't used Windows media player for years and don't miss it Sorry I can't answer your question
If you install the correct codecs ... any WMP or other DirectShow player will play DVD's.
You need a MPEG2 decoder ..

and an audio decoder .. this will do everything ....

These are both small installs and will not infest your system like Codec Packs do.
Link not working correctly. You need AC3 codec ... 163b is ok.

(that's 2x codecs ... Mpeg2 and AC3)

Many thanks. I will stay with VLC.
vlc media player is great. Can play a lot more formats than media player and less resource hungry.
