Word 200 and Tables

Just wondering if someone might know of a reason why my verson of Word 2000 will happily convert any text I have to a table but will not do the the reverse?

I have put quite a large amount of text into an Excel table and the cut and paste it to Word in the hope of converting it to text and working with it there.

The Help function says that there should be an option on the Insert>Tables to 'convert table to text' but it just isnt there ('text to table' is ???)

Any ideas (or better still solutions) appreciated
