If i wanted to play 16player halo 2 could i just link up 4 Xbox's via a router?

You would just need a hub rather than a router.  You cancertainly connect 4 consoles up using a hub for system link but I don't know if halo 2 supports 4 players per console.  Check on the box if it says 1 - 4 players then you should be ok.

i thought that a router,hub and switch were all essentially the same thing.
