A year ago, I became a humanist minister, catering for non christian funerals in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
I have just set up a simple web site.
How do I get the web to recognise my site, if people do a web search for "Humanist funerals", or something similar. Any ideas please
Thank you

Firstly, ensure that there are plenty of relevant meta tags hidden within your web pages. (They're not as important as they used to be, but every little helps!).

Then persuade everybody that you can think of to include links to your site on their own sites. (That's because the links will be picked up by web crawlers).

Then submit your site details to those search engines which allow direct submissions from webmasters. (Not all do). And/or add your listing to those web directories which search engines' web crawlers get their information from.

Thanks, Chris for all that.
plenty to think about

Also, make sure your home page is not javascript or made up soley of images as Google etc won't pick it up.

Make sure there's plenty of relevant text on the home page and that the meta tag words are also incorporated in the visible text. This tells the Bot that the tags are relevant to the page.

Links from other sites are good but only if the sites linking to you are of a high ranking with Google. Google ranks each web page and better quality links to your page will give you a better rank yourself i.e a link from say the BBC site to yours is worth a lot more than a link from Joe Blogg's site about his family. Don't be tempted to get your website listed on a links page (a site that has purely links to other sites), Google will see through this and it will go against you.

Google seems to be the biggy amongst the search engines. You could create a Sitemap to boost your ratings with them.
