Does watching say, a couple of hours of programmes on BBC iPlayer use about the same amount of 'online time' as down loading a movie?

Yes, the same as streaming music from internet radio.
think in terms of files ... an average movie is a DVD = 4.7Gb
streamed vid will be up to approx 700Mb / hour (depends on quality)
VCD = 350Mb/hour
music is about 1Mb/min
