Can anyone recommend a decent inexpensive camera with an optical viewfinder. I would like one with an absolute minimum 3X magnification but would prefer a higher magnification if possible. My present camera uses up batteries at an alarming rate so I wish to replace it, but really only want a "point and shoot" camera.

Optical viewfinders are dissapearing fast ... ''larger screen'' seems to be the selling point these days.
But as screens become larger, there is less room for a viewfinder.
They are a real advantage aspecially in bright sunlight.
Have a look at this...you can always select auto, and it then becomes a point and shoot making all the adjustments automatically.

I don't think digital cameras have old-style optical viewfinders, but some have electronic viewfinders that are basically the same as you see on the screen on the back - that is, they're digital pictures, not the real thing seen through glass.

You could look for ones that use rechargeable batteries if it's eating up AAs.

Almost everyone offers 3x zoom as far as I know.

Sorry, I've been googling to find one with a viewfinder and haven't, and now it's bedtime... google EVF for electronic viewfinder
Here's a nice one..plenty zoom and a viewfinder...

Thanks for the suggestions. I have gone for a Canon Ixus 970IS which seems ideal for my needs.
