The ratio of digital cameras is 4 x 3 the ratio of your monitor is different.

thanks sarah-louise, but does that apply to all digital cameras ? or does the ratio vary from camera to camera.
I've had the same problem with two different cameras.
Not on every photo but enough to annoy me. Is it my fault ?
It applies to most cameras. The only way round it is to crop your photo to the same aspect ratio (i.e., trim off the top and/or bottom of the picture)
