Laptop Problem

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron. It suddenly shot down when my grandson was on the internet. Since then for some reason it is refusing to start up. When I turn it on I see the DELL logo, then on the next screen the words Microsoft Corporation and a little thing like you see on your mobile when the battery is charging. After that, just nothing. Is there anything I can do to try to remedy matters or do I need to leave it in a PC repair shop and pay a fortune? By the way there is nothing important on it as my granddaughter mainly uses it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
