curser keeps disappearing

Whilst I am typing my curser keeps disappearing for a second or two, comes back and goes again, constantly. It is becoming impossible to type anything without correcting it all the time as so many letters are missing. Does anyone know why it is doing this and how I can correct the problem? Thanks in advance.
